How Do I Self Isolate? The More You Know The Less You Fear - An Astronaut's Guide During COVID-19

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

How are you doing with self isolation? How do you feel? What are you doing with your time? What is holding you back?

As many of us learn to adjust to a new world of self isolation, most of us are wondering: Am I doing this the right way? What could I do better? What's the best way to self isolate?

How about recommendations from an expert in self isolation - like an Astronaut.

Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space, has flown two Space Shuttle missions, and served as commander of the International Space Station.

During his missions Hadfield gained popularity by chronicling life aboard the space station including his love of music and playing the guitar.

Hadfield's advice is simple yet critical to surviving any mission: the more you know, the less you fear.

Here are four tips from one of the worlds best experts in self isolation:

Hadfield's 4 Tips for Self Isolation Summarized:

1. Know the Actual Risk you are Facing. Go to credible sources for that information.

2. Choose a Goal. What is Your Mission? What is your purpose? What are you trying to accomplish for right now, today?

3. What are Your Constraints? What might be holding you back? What resources are at your disposal?

4. Once you understand your risk, your mission, or obligations, and your constraints - then TAKE ACTION - start moving towards your goal, your mission. Do this each day and then repeat again.

As Hadfield says, the actions you take do not necessarily need to be the same as the actions you took before. There are so many new things each of us can try.

Like learning to play the guitar.

Learning a new language.

Starting a new project.

Read a book.

Write.

Create.

Or doing more around your home to help your family out.

And finding a way to help your neighbours too.

Or finally making time for that life goal, that one thing that's escaped you, all these years.

Now is the time.

Ultimately, what each of us do with the time is for us to decide.

And while there are things we have lost, we still have so much more to be grateful for.

I heard something recently that I know rings true: The reason most people don't reach their goals in life is because they don't have a clear idea of what their goals are. And then for those who do have a clear vision, they don't stick with the daily process of working on reaching those goals until the job is done.

It means finding fulfillment in each day, and purpose in life, at any age.
