How do I Develop Mental Toughness?

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

Mental toughness is not something that happens over night, it takes years of practice and life experience to get it right. There will be many unexpected highs and lows in life. But learning how to react to those new experiences will be critical to building your mental toughness and finding success and happiness in your every day life.

Here's my key 6 rules on how to build mental toughness:

Healthy Internal dialogue: It’s estimated we have somewhere between 50,000–70,000 thoughts per day. That’s 35–48 thoughts per minute for each of us. Meaning the most important conversation we have each day is with ourselves.

Challenge Negative thoughts: Depression can be caused by mental illness but it can also be caused by negative thoughts spiralling out of control. This means how we think literally impacts our health. When our minds place negative thoughts in our heads it’s important to question why they are there or where they come from.

Have a mental catalogue of your accomplishments: It’s easy to recall the things we failed at in life. But how much time do we take recalling all the amazingly difficult accomplishments we’ve made. Have a mental list of the most gratifying, difficult and rewarding experiences handy the next time something in your mind says “I’m not sure if I can get this done.”

Reflect on your day each day: I discuss this on The-Inspired.com in a number of my posts as a firm believer that we should review each day to learn from it. When you go to sleep at night, give yourself time to think about what went well, what could have gone better and what made you feel most fulfilled in your day.

Build Routines around the positives of your day: After you’ve spent time reflecting on what gave you the most happiness, it only makes sense to build it into your daily routine. Routines are GOOD CHOICES YOU DON”T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT that will add to your mental toughness.

Plan your days before they start: If you have a plan for your day, that means you have goals and routines you are working towards and follow. Routines are critical to reducing the chances of making bad decisions and increasing your mental toughness when things do not go as planned.
